Polystachia vulcanica

Ligth, cold to intermediary temperature, flower all year
Found in Rwanda, Uganda and Zaire as a small sized, cold to warm growing epiphyte at elevations of 1650 to 3000 meters in montane forests on mossy branches and occasionally as a lithophyte, with short psuedobulbs in dense clumps, carrying a single, apical, linear, fleshy, flat or terete leaf that blooms on a 1 to 3" [2.5 to 7.5 cm] long, shorter than the leaf, simple, several [to 5] flowered inflorescence arising from the apex of the mature pseudobulb occuring sporadically throughout the year. The orchid that is in the photo is Polystachya vulcanica var. vulcanica a larger sized plant with terete leaves and larger flowers, the other variety is Polystachya vulcanica var. aconitiflora (Summerh.) Cribb & Podzorski 1979 which was considered a separate species, Polystachya aconitiflora Summerh.1942 until recently.
